What are somethings to consider when getting a larger bird?

Is one bird better to get than another? I have 2 yorkie dogs and a cat allready, any suggestions

I like Conures… They have the big personality of a Parrot but in a smaller sized bird. You would need to consider the safety of the bird in your home. Kids are not good to have around birds, teenagers are fine, but kids are a no no. Birds bite, it’s what they do, and kids seem to have trouble with not slinging the bird perched on their finger across the room when bitten (no matter how many times you tell them not to). They also don’t seem to understand how fragile a bird is. Birds are also very curious and like shiny things. I have lost many earrings to my birds wonderful, quick, stealing ability. Cats are also very dangerous to have around birds. One nick from a cat’s nail could potentially kill a bird. Dog and cat saliva aren’t good for the bird either, human saliva too… The fumes from household cleaners and candles are dangerous for birds as well. You’d have to switch to an Earth friendly cleanser, which is a good thing anyway. :) No candles or scented oils in the room with the bird unless there is something around for ventilation. Teflon cooking pans/pots aren’t good either. Birds lungs (and air sacs) work differently than our lungs, toxic fumes are more dangerous to them. Bird vet bills are extremely expensive. An office visit for my Conure costs about $50, that is not including the costs of anything they do to him. Birds really aren’t good pets when it comes to that kind of stuff, you have to change a lot to keep the bird healthy. On the bright side, if you can handle all of that, birds make amazing friends. They cuddle and love just like a dog or cat, and are really amusing to have in the house. Do some reading for more detailed information on the bird that you want, there are a lot of pet/bird specific books available. Just to add, you know your other pets better that I do, if you know they’d be fine around a fluttering animal, then it’s ok. My cat is scared of my bird lol. There is way too much that I could type here. :p

I think the age limit that most people go by for owning any bird is 14+. Kids really don’t seem to be able to control the jerk movement that happens after getting bit. I wouldn’t recommend getting one until they are older, but then again, I do not know your kids. There are several pet stores (at least in my area..) that have birds out of their cages and you can play with them in the store, maybe take your kids to something like that and see how they handle the birds? You could also ask the employees if there is a bird there, that they’ve observed, that seems to like kids.

They r actually afraid of them but friendly, like the ones in the pet store that e out, they will go up to them and pet tham but it does take them a minute to do so, they r easy with birds, I happen to like them just wasn’t sure about everything, I think I’m gonna stick with no bird, I appreciate ur help :-)

No problem. :) Hope you can get a bird one day, I think you’d enjoy it more when you don’t have the kids to worry about. :)

Larger birds (parrots etc) need a lot of time and affection, they also generally aren’t recommended for younger kids. My suggestion, wait till your kids are older or out of the house. Also cats plus birds tends to be a little iffy. But maybe when you’re older and have some time on your hands, think about a bird. They do make amazing pets. We’ve got an african grey at home and she really is a wonderful pet to have.
