How will smoking affect me when i'm on "The Pill" ?

I am starting to take birth control and I smoke, I was told it would increase the chance of blood clots. Are there other side-affects that can be caused by smoking while on the pill?

Answer #1

Smoking itself is quite harmful, but combined with the pill can increase the risks of heart diseases. Smoking while on the pill increases the chance of cardiovascular problems such as stroke, heart attacks and blood clots as aforementioned. The chances of this is increases significantly for heavy smokers and women over the age of 35. If your family has a history of cardiovascular problems, I’d be more cautious about smoking and taking any estrogen-releasing contraceptive. At 14, really, I would work on quitting. You’re much too young to even have begun smoking.
