How can the baby be affected if the mother continues to smoke while pregnant?

My sister is about 12 weeks pregnant now and I’m not sure how she’s doing at the moment, but when she was 7 weeks gone she continued to smoke. I told her that I won’t have her smoke in my presence while pregnant as I think it’s irresponsible and scummy but she insisted that she’d stop when her morning sickness kicks in. I like to think that she’s stopped now but I don’t really know. I’m really concerned for her baby so I’m wondering what kind of affect this could have had?

The most common issue associated with smoking during pregnancy is low birth weight, which can cause huge health complications throughout the childs life. It also commonly causes premature birth and stillbirth. Birth defects such as cleft lip, limb deformities and heart problems are also fairly common.

It can do, yes. Being slower to learn is something which can happen with low birth weight. It can also be more serious - low birth weight can potentially cause quite serious problems with brain development.

From personal experience, even second hand smoke around a pregnant woman have dire consequences. My mother was in such an environment, had two miscarriages before my brother, he was premature and has a range of health problems including learning difficulties. I also have a weak immune system due to being in second hand smoke as a child, asthma is one of the side effects. So my point is smoking around children or when you are pregnant is not ok, because we cannot make our own decisions of whether to live with it. If she wants to damage her body after the pregnancy let her, but really she should think of her child. It isn’t fair towards the baby.
