I’ve been screaming for many, many months and it hasn’t hurt my throat at all. Not trying to piss you off or anything, but if your throats hurting you couldn’t possibly be doing it right…

When you scream, you strain your throat muscles, and force growls or air from your diaphragm and as the oxygen passes through the strained throat muscles you’ll be forcing a screaming sound out. It is all done in the diaphragm, NOT the throat. Make sure you drink room temp water, and for practising, try the shower (cliche I know) but the steam from the shower does in fact help…

no don’t quit!

I had the same problem back in middle school, so I quit. Don’t give up like I did. I wasted so much time. I started up again in college because once you learn how to do it correctly, it won’t kill your voice.

I learned how to do it while using “The Zen of Screaming” volumes 1 & 2 DVDs. by Melissa Cross. Volume 1 tells you how to breathe by using your diaphragm and how to warm up. Vol. 2 goes into different kinds of screams, like fry, death, and false cord. While browsing around I saw her vids on YouTube, also. I use fry the most and it doesn’t hurt a bit. (unless I do it for 4-5 hours straight.) Volume doesn’t always mean power. Concentrate on dialing in the frequencies you want at low volumes to protect your pipes and the microphone will add the volume so you don’t have to, and don’t be afraid to get real close or even cup the mic in order to put it out there.

sounds to me like you need to improve your screeming techniuch I screem in a band and I hurt but once you find whats right for you , you should be good . never give up on something worth keeping

Answer #5

Don’t quit, if it’s something you love doing, don’t quit doing it. Just take a break here and there so your throat can rest from all the singing. I went through that when I sung Death Metal 2 years ago, stopped cause it was hurting my throat very badly.

Answer #6

I’d stop if I were you.. if not then learn best way to actually do it.. I don’t know if its true or not but I’ve heard that you do screamo from like the stomach or something. not your throat.. but like I said I just heard it so yeah.. but in the long run it wouldn’t be good for your throat.

Answer #7

hmm..if you love it then do it..but take care of your throat..don’t drink cold stuff..u know the stuff people in a choir do…

Answer #8

If singing is your passion and something you live for, then the pain shouldn’t be a factor. Believe me, I’m in a lot of painful situations whether it’s physical/emotional.

Answer #9

use your diaphragm not your throat. place all the pressure there. it’s not as loud, but it’s WAY less damaging. if that doesn’t work, try YouTubin’ some how to’s on it. don’t quit.

Answer #10

You’re most likely doing it wrong. It should come from your chest, and not your throat. If it keeps hurting you should see a doctor, a lot of vocalists rip up their chords doing this.
