Does this sentence require a question mark and, if so, can I end an English essay with it?

The last essay to my witch trial essay is: If the Salem population had thought more like the people of today’s world, who knows how many lives could have been saved. Does this require a question mark and if it does, is it okay to end an essay with it?

its never a good idea to end an essay with a rhetorical question. try re wording it to something like,” many lives were lose because the population of Salem allowed themselves to make decisions based on fear instead of logic.” assuming you are writing about the crucible, or doing a paper on the Salem witch trials…

No - it doesn’t need a question mark … it’s not question - it’s a statement. You’re not looking for an answer, you’re just opening up the topic for people to think for themselves. You can certainly end the essay with that statement.

It’s not a statement; it’s a rhetorical question (a question asked to convey an idea, not to seek an answer), and requires a question mark like any other question. Whether to end your essay with it or not is a stylistic question, not a factual one. I’d say it’s ok for an informal essay; otherwise, not.
