Really stupid question on semi colon.

This is a really dumb thing to ask but how do you use a semi colon and where do you put them in sentence?

I don’t use them in my work and it could be loosing me marks not using a variaty of punctuation.

Thanks.

wow, thanks when you put it like that, I feel such an idiot. It’ll come in handy with this essay I ned to write.

Thanks!

Answer #2

You get marked up for the quality of punctuation, yes.

You tend to use them in place of “because” or “therefore”. So a sentence could be,

It was hot outside, therefore I used sun cream.

Or

It was hot outside; I used sun cream.

Another example:

I don’t know why I even try because I always lose no matter what.

Or

I don’t know why I even try; I always lose no matter what.

So, if you have a because/therefore in your sentence take it out and use a semi-colon instead. Don’t do it too much though or it negates its effect. Also try using dashes, colons and ellipses if you want to get marked up for punctuation.

Answer #3

ohsarah is correct.

Also I’ve seen it used a lot before people list things…instead of using a colon.
