Schizophrenia and high IQ

I have an IQ of 186. Can that relate to my schizophrenia in any way. I only ask because it is not my specialization.

Cook11111 - what you’re doing is using an availability heuristic: making a judgment based on what you can remember, rather than complete data. In particular it is used for judging frequency or likelihood of events.

These are a few examples you can think of or remember and so you’re assuming that it’s a pattern. Until you get information from a good number of people (say like a 1000) and compare those with high IQs to those with low IQs and see if a greater percentage of people with high IQs have mental disorders you cant know if it is true or not… but if it is really something you’re curious about, I’ll look it up when I get to school and have access to psychology journals… just funmail me and remind me…

Answer #2

Sleep deprived or not, I have great doubt about your “claimed” IQ… but in answer to your question… Recent studies debunk your theory of high IQ = mental illness…

A high IQ can lessen the severity of disorders such as depression and schizophrenia, say researchers from Cambridge University. “It has been known for some time that intelligence can protect you against dementia and the consequences of head injury,” said a university spokeswoman. “However, researchers at the University of Cambridge’s Department of Psychiatry have discovered that intelligence can also buffer the consequences of neuropsychiatry disorders such as schizophrenia. “They have demonstrated that the symptoms of schizophrenia are less severe and the ability to function in daily living is better for those with a higher IQ.”

Another study indicating that a high IQ decreases the risk of serious mental illness… A recent study of 50,000+ men indicated that higher IQ scores may decrease the risk for developing psychotic symptoms or disorders. Men with lower-than-average IQ scores had a 40% greater risk of developing schizo-affective disorder, as compared with those subjects with the highest IQ scores. This findings corroborate those of earlier studies, which linked early-onset schizophrenia and lower-than-average childhood education scores. Research also suggests that prenatal stress (I.e. stress during pregnancy) increases risk for the child of both low IQ and schizophrenia - so the research suggests a common mechanism of brain damage caused by stress during pregnancy

While there is a study linking mental illness and creativity… “Scientists have wondered for a long time why madness and creativity seem linked, particularly in artists, musicians, and writers,” notes Shelley Carson, a Harvard psychologist. “Our research results indicate that low levels of latent inhibition and exceptional flexibility in thought predispose people to mental illness under some conditions and to creative accomplishments under others.”

Sorry, high IQ does not seem to exacerbate mental illness…

Answer #3

now can we get back to the true quesion. think for youselfs looking back into time amost all higher IQ individuals are preyed on by some illnesses. true or not but now think most killers.Good killers that kill 50 or more people have what.

Answer #4

Do you find it a little disingenuous that you posted a question asking us what we think and then tell us that you don’t care what we think?

But I agree with Jello – it’s difficult to accept that your IQ is as high as you say it is when your spelling, grammar, and punctuation are so poor.

Answer #5

I can see why thinking outside the box so to speak (which people who have mental disorders sometimes do) could lead to innovation, so I can see where a hazy connection might be drawn, but I havent heard of any studies linking IQ to disorders…

Answer #6

sorry when I said my two personality help me think faster. I should of said my hallucinations some how give me some new knowledge of things like two mind working at once. I dont realy understand it, realy

Answer #7

You’ve muddied the waters a bit with the last comment, I’m afraid, cook. With what, exactly, have you been diagnosed? Schizophrenia and dissociative personality disorder are two different illnesses.

Answer #8

Exactly!!! Be nice. I know A lot of people, mainly kids, who are autistic. These children are VERY smart. They are extremely particular about where things go and how things are done. They have to have a routine. They stick by this routine, no matter what! When their routine goes in a different direction it is hard for them.

My nephew is Autistic and he is 12. Smartest 12 year old I have ever come across. I don’t know his IQ though. I’ll ask my sister if he has been tested.

Answer #9

my brother has Schizophrenia and he also has a very high IQ.im not sure but I have heard that a lot of people with schizophrenia are very intelligent.it could be related..

Answer #10

I’d need to see some citations on this before I ventured any comment. I have never heard of any studies linking intelligence and physical and mental disorders. Do you have the links to the studies? And in the biographies of Einstein I’ve read, I’ve never heard any mention of a mental disorder, but perhaps you know of a source I do not.

But my question stems back to your original post – with what have you been diagnosed, schizophrenia or DPD?

Answer #11

now think about this amost all people with realy hight have some mental disorter or some phyisical disorter. not to say that all have this. stephen hawking has a phyisical disorter and his IQ is 160. Hitler completely nuts IQ 141 Albert Einstein at the end of this life he went completely insane from trying to finish the unified theory. so the true Question is are all those who are highly intelligent in the end driven mad by there own comprehension.

Answer #12

the reason I ask I that it seems my mind works faster when more then one presonality is speaking. like two mind are better than one

Answer #13

I’m not an expert in this, but I would think that Schizophrenia and IQ are unrelated, as people with average IQ or even low IQ’s can be Schizophrenic.

however, there are instances where higher intelligence leads to some other cognative abilities that are significantly weaker than average.

Answer #14

I’m interested in the Ambivalent Mind. A mind inconflict with itself will either break the person down but in some cases evolve the perception. You have reasons that other people don’t have,to think and learn things.

Answer #15

time out! :) be nice people!
