What will come to replace monotheism?

Nothing lasts forever. No matter how much humans have believed absolutely that one brand or style of devotion is right, another has eventually come to dominate - even if it is effectively a re-labelling or re-invention of what has gone before. The one certainty is change. The greater the population, the faster the rate of production and pursuit of new ideas. What will be the next big idea in religion? There must come a tipping point where the perceived costs of present models of monotheism outweigh their perceived value, I think. The actual costs of monotheism - to believers and non-believers alike - have yet to be properly assessed. That will provide the wake-up call, I suspect.

Answer #1

I doubt anything will monotheism’s been around since egyptian times Nothing will replace the belief in one god, however, which god they believe in may, & I’m sure will eventually

Answer #2

Given that monotheism has been around for a relatively short period of time given the length of human history, and the length that polytheism managed to stick around for (it is still around afterall), it’s hard to imagine what is next. Also, it is unlikely to be completely replaced. Just something will become more popular. Who knows what.

Answer #3

Judeo-Christian-Islam define themselves as monotheist but that doesn’t automatically make it so.

Angels and demons could just have easily been called lesser gods and Jesus being part man and part god would be a demigod in other pantheons..

My guess is that New Age religions blending elements of Eastern, and Western, religions with philosophy and psychiatry will grow in popularity.

As Ty says, polytheism didn’t die out, indeed it flourishes in the East and Far East. Catholicism may technically be monotheistic, but its saints cover far more topics than the Greco-Roman pantheon; it looks more like pan-paganism re-invented to facilitate the early conversion and expansion phase. But I digress. I could foresee a stratification between religions for the well-educated and the not however. In the UK it is only the more recent immigrations of Africans, Philipinos and Eastern Europeans that has slowed the rate of Catholic church closure, but they are notably mostly at the poorer end of the wage scale - which has been the Catholic growth area in S America etc. The larger decline seems to be amongst the educated. What message do you think might draw the most people?
