pshyciatrist

do you need to go with your parents if your under 18 and need to go to a pshyciatrist??

Answer #1

You don’t have to go with your parents if you don’t want too. You can legally see a psyciatrist without them, and they also can not tell your parents what is discussed, unless there is a chance you may harm yourself or others.

Answer #3

they have to know about it because of the insurance and stuff but depending on what type of person you are you should be careful about what you say because they can tell if your gonna hurt yourself, if you have, or if you plan to, or hurt others and a couple other things you just have to ask what you can or cant say.

In the US (not sure if puerto rico has the same rules, but I’m guessing they do), you cannot see a mental health provider without parental consent, the only exceptions (and this varies from place to place), are emergencies (which means sessions are limited), things related to STDs and substance abuse. Your parents do not have to come with you, but they do need to sign an informed consent form. The laws tend to favor the parents unfortunately, and their rights to know. Personally I think it is stupid, given how much teens need this help and are afraid to talk to their parents, but the law is the law, and no one would risk their license on not getting parental consent…
