Post office and boxes

Okay so I dropped off a box at my boyfriends house (he is in afghan.) so that his family could mail it off for me bc I didnt have any money at the moment (yes I will pay them back) and well I sealed it up and whatnot so that they wouldnt have to pay for a box. Well turns out that his sister told me that its more expensive if You take it with the box?

I dont get it how is that? Isnt it suppose to be cheaper because your saving money from the box? And all they gotta do then is weigh it?

This is what she said..

‘’oh she did say that if you go up to the post office and ask for one of there boxes it would only cost no more then ten dollars. Bc its there box and you can put w/e in there. Therefore if you have your own box theyd have to weigh it and stuff and itd be more. Just a little info bc it would save us a lot of money. ‘’

So chea im confused.

Answer #1

apparently if you buy one of their boxes, they won’t charge you the extra postage for the weight… because you’re giving them 10$ for a box.

Answer #2

it’s because the postage is determined by the weight. the object weighs more with a box around it than it does on it’s own, so it will cost more.
