Is declawing normal for dogs?
I need to know if dewclawing is a proceedure normally done on pomeranians? Does it devalue them or increase their value?
I’m sure they ment dew claws. I never heard of declawing a dog. They do cut there dew claws off at birth. (they are like ther thumbs). If the dog is over a few days old its to late to get it dew claws off unless it becomes necessary.
I was out in the yard with my dogs just now and your question just made sense to me. I could not figure out why on earth would someone want to declaw a dog. You didn’t word your question properly. I think you question is about removing the dew claws. This web page will give you the info you are looking for. http://dogs.thefuntimesguide.com/2006/05/removing_dew_claws.php
I was only wondering because of friend of mine breeds them and she declawed them. I thought it was creul too. I wanted to see if there was a reason- if it sold them for more or something.
Well you shouldent Declaw them just get the claws trimed you can do it at home or go get it done at a local vet clinic (vets charge alot tho.)
i used to have a pom and i never even thought of declawing her because she never scratched me i just reguraly cliped her nails with a dog nail cutter and it worked out fine
Dew claws are a totally different thing…Dewclaws are the “extra toe” that kind of dangles on the “ankles” of the hind legs…these are removed right after birth…their removal is done for showing of course…but it’s a safety thing, also. Dewclaws can get caught and pulled off in adult dogs…extremely painful, and bleed uncontrolably…

The question is?
I need to know if dew clawing is a procedure normally done on a Pomeranian? Does it devalue them or increase their value?
A Pomeranian is a dog and dogs don’t have claws. They have paws with toe nails similar to finger nails like people. They need to be properly cut or filed just like ours. You would not be able to find a vet that would mutilate a dog in that way. This would decrees the value to nothing. However, a vet or groomer would teach you how to properly care for your dogs nails. Depending on the quality of your dogs diet there nails will grow faster than other dogs. I have to cut my dogs nails every 3 to 4 weeks.
yes, just have them clipped once every month or so with the special nail clippers made for dogs. just make sure you don’t clip too far down or they will bleed. I only warn you of that because it is easy to make that mistake. Some doggy bath places will clip em for you. If you were going to pay for having the dog de-clawed, you could take it to a doggy shampoo place for cheap and get your dog a bath and possibly a hair trim if its desired (its nice to do that for them in the summer if it gets hot and sunny where you live, your dog will love you for giving it a summer cut, trust me) and the professional can show you how to properly trim the nails and then you can know how to do it at home so you don’t pay for it every time. good luck, I used to have a mini pom and I loved it more than anything. :-)
it would be horribly painful for the dog and it would decrease the value. you shouldn’t declaw a dog.
Declawing is a painful and unnecessary procedure. What about asking about the pain instead of the dog’s value?
Why are you worried about the “value” of you dog?…never heard of anyone declawing a dog, sounds cruel, unnessary, and stupid to me. Is this a crank question?

DECLAWING ACTUALLY TAKES OFF THE FIRST SEGMENT OF THEIR TOE. ITS VERY PAINFUL.
The removal of a Pomeranian’s dewclaws isn’t normally done but it isn’t unheard of. If it is going to be done it should be done before one month of age. They have an easier time healing afterwards when they are young versus doing it when they are older.
The dewclaw on a dog is an extra claw on the side of their paw that typically doesn’t touch the ground and isn’t attached to any bone. Removal of this claw is very easy and doesn’t cause the dog any trouble later on.
If the dog is having issues with the dewclaw and it is causing them discomfort or it gets torn then they should be removed. However, if the dog seems fine with them then it is ok to leave them alone.
If you plan on showing the dog, then the AKC standards states that the dewclaws can be either attached or removed for this particular breed.
