Why do people test products on animals, what's the point?

Don’t just say “Because they’re mean!”…I am looking for the reasoning behind it.

Answer #1

to make sure the product doesnt hurt a human being.

pretty bad if you ask me… most of teh girls i know use animal tested free products

Answer #2

They test on animals because alot of people think its more “humaine” to test on animals rather than a human being. Testing in general is necccasary because we need to know the reactions of certain chemicals and how it will affect a human being, however, the testing being done to animals is hardly ever humaine. I dont agree with testing cosmetics on animals…i believe if we want these luxory items so bad that humans can step forth for testing since they arent neccasary items. I do however agree with animal testing as far as medicine and treatments go.

Answer #3

Hmm, I don’t understand how an animal would react the same way to the product as a human. Their skin is much different.

Answer #4

The primary reason is so that they don’t harm the intended people of the product (humans). It’s also widely used in the medecine industry to prove that certain medecines do their intended jobs.

I completely disagree with animal testing however our society has unfortunately become accustomed to it. We rely on it due to not only our materialistic needs but our health too. I do wish that one day we will be able to rely on other methods.

Answer #5

This is one of the many flaws of animal testing. Even though we have descended from monkeys there are not always the same effects on humans. However, in their eyes the closest organism (mammal) will have to do because in order to achieve the results that they need.

Answer #6

i look at it as, would you rather you get tested on a product that could be very dangerous and hurt your life, or hurt an animal’s life? if it wasnt for animal testing we wouldnt have as many meds we have today so you can look at it as a good thing

Answer #7

Several reasons. The most obvious being that before a product is approved for human use, we need to know it is safe. Secondly, animals, especially rodents breed prolifically and have very short life cycles. It is entirely unrealistic carry out initual tests in humans, when it will take a huge amount of time to be able to rule out harmful effects which may develop. Thirdly, animals can be genetically modified whereas the overwhelming opinion is that this is unethical to do in humans. We can breed lines of mice that do not express certain genes and this is very useful for scientic and biomedical research. Also, they are remarkably similar to humans and make good model systems. As much as I dislike animal testing, I cannot see any alternative for conducting biomedical research. I love animals, and I love our lab animals. I feel bad sometimes for what I have to do to my lab animals in order to conduct my research. Most of all I feel bad that while my research will hopefully benefit humans, it is never going to have any benefit to the mice that made it possible. However, our lab rodents live are treated well, and with a lot of respect. In the end, I dont think its any worse than someone killing rodents in their home, which happens all the time and yet many people dont even think twice about. Using animals for testing products like cosmetics I think it a different matter. I do not condone it at all and think it is extremely unnecessary. I make sure all my cosmetic products are not tested on animals.
