obsessive compulsive disorder (ocd)?

I think I might have ocd..how do you get diagnosed?

Answer #1

OCD is very complex disorder. If you feel like you have it you can talk to a doctor about it. Check for symptoms though. Symptoms being…

  1. Obsessing over little things that are out of place
  2. Afraid to get out of a pattern
  3. Paranoia (Of other people or even things like getting sick)

There are more stmptoms but I can’t think of them right now. But I know my brother is clinically diagnosed and he has to take meds for it. I would be careful though, some forms of OCD can cause depression. You might want to get it checked out if you REALLY think you might have it. It can be a serious problem.

If you believe you have ocd, maybe you do, maybe you don’t. . .I wouldn’t suggest looking at an inventory and deciding that’s that.

What happens in OCD is that you get in an obsessive loop which drives you to perform compulsive behavior in order to try and break this cycle. It seems counter-productive as the behaviors usually just make the situation worse. Common OCD responses are persistent ritualistic methods of cleaning, going about daily activities, ect.

Don’t confuse this with being a type A personality who just likes everything to be in its place because that’s a whole different ballpark.

If you get into these strange loops, try to figure out what your patterns are and then go see either your family doctor about it, a psychiatrist, or a therapist (a psychologist or a social worker who is licensed can also do a diagnosis) and work with them on a plan to help. Behavioral modifications are very helpful and there are medications that can stop the constant repetitious thought patterns.
