Why is it that a nun can be covered from head to toe in order to devote herself to god but if a Muslim girl does the same she is oppressed?
It means like it sounds sort of..they cover themselves in such a way to show to others and god that they differ and that they are dedicated to god and his wishes
Treatment VERY different….check the news…..
It’s about the culture and how people interpret it. Generally speaking (and I am generalizing quite extensively), people have a choice whether they want to become a nun and cover themselves, whereas muslim women are often forced to wear the hijaab and seen as a disgrace if they do not comply with the rules of their respective cultures. Not all are though and I have a few friends for whom it is a choice.
Muslim girls that cover themselves like that are considered oppressed because they look at America, be it on TV or when missionaries or troops come through, and they see how women here have so much freedom, (the same as men), that’s when the word “oppressed” gets thrown into the mix. We don’t have to cover our entire bodies or worship out men, so they see that and immediately know that they have it pretty bad. Without the media, missionaries, or our troops being in their part of the world, they wouldn’t even know any better.
Actually it’s the american women who sees muslim women as oppressed, not generally the other way around that that is why they are judged. America in General does not like nor understand the Muslim beliefs. Also for some of them it is a choice to cover their bodies. One of my Muslim friends explained it to me, that women are seen as precious and cover themselves so that only their family and husband have the privilege of seeing their beauty, not necessarily because they are “oppressed”
Does the term ‘oppressed’ not apply when women are not respected/treated like second-class property, buried up the their necks and stoned/beaten/beheaded/not allowed to ever leave the house or if they do even ‘talk’ to a male,etc…..if it doesn’t then no, they’re not oppressed…..
You got to remember this is two VERY different religions so it means something different in each religion
Not making a value judgement against Islam; I find Christian extremists every bit as menacing as Muslim extremists. The two are not exactly equivalent. Nuns are similar to monks in that they dedicate themselves to service and take vows. Wearing a habit is part of being a nun, not part of being an everyday Christian. In conservative Islamic areas all Muslim women are expected to cover themselves. Much of the concern with Muslim clothing is the burqa which covers the face of the wearer. Nuns habits do not cover the face.
Are they really that different?
Both are monotheistic. Both are Abrahamic religions. Both originated in the Middle East. Both believe their god created the universe. Both believe their god is loving and forgiving. Both believe man can communicate with their god through prayer. Both believe Jesus was sent by God, that he performed miracles and claim to follow his teachings.
Islam and Christianity have strong doctrinal differences such as the substance of Jesus and the trinity but at their core they have more similarities than differences.
It’s because Islam is a “evil” religion to ignorant people because they think all Muslims are terrorists and so they oppress them. I think it’s stupid and everyone should have the freedom to wear their religious clothing
First of all, nuns are not forced to wear Habits anymore, Christianity is a religion that has been reformed to change with the times. Even when they did, they CHOSE to wear them when they chose to become nuns. Muslim women are FORCED to cover their entire body against there will. Dont start trying to compare apples with oranges. I have been to muslim nations, very oppressed people. Western societies based in christian principles offer more freedoms than any other nation. Thank God I live in the USA!!!
I think some people see the Islam custom as sexist..whereas a nun is devoting her life to serving God and does not partake in any romantic relationships.
The difference is that muslims choose to live in 632 bc, whereas MOST christians adhere to the many reformations they have had over aperiod of a couple thousand years. Not judging, there is something to be said about so-called progress, especially when it comes to the depletion of our natural resources, and the wedge is has produced between us and nature/creator.
i meant 632 AD lol.
Most Muslims I meet are firmly in the 21st century. The ones I meet are educated in the West and are usually scientists, engineers or doctors. There are 1.5 billion Muslims in the world. Do you think that maybe the Muslims who want to return to the dark ages are a small but very vocal minority of Muslims just like Fundamentalist Christians are a small but very vocal minority of Christians?
Most muslims are forced into the dark ages, by the few you are talking about. Of course I have been to five muslim countries. The people in muslim countries are being lied to and manipulated enmass.
whats up with the check with the news? huh? you take from the news now? (to Niky) i think we all know that the news interpret thing the way the want …ask a muslim! i myself wear the burka as you call it, by choice! i feel protected , respected by the non ignorant and extremely happy with myself for doing this for the sake of pleasing god alone.
the media has islam in the spot light…because they know its the thruth! its a religion of peace! otherwise why would it the the quickest growing religion in the world?
