Why do Muslims have to cover themselves?

I am a muslim but my family does not cover themselves with a hajib or pray 5 times a day. This scares me because where ever i read about muslim it says they cant show there hair, wear make up, jeans, or do there eyebrows, or look at boys; my parents do teach me that when i go to the mask on occasions i must cover myself, also i am a virgin and they taught me to stay one til marriage, but im still worried about this whole thing.

Being a Muslim does not mean you should follow the book to the letter. It is appropriate to do so, but you have to remember about your background as well.

Some women in Pakistan or in Bangladesh that are Muslim aren’t required by their cultures to cover up their hair with a dupatta or hijab. In fact, in Bangladesh, the culture is so open, that women can wear tank tops if they please, just like in Turkey.

The cultures of different countries and regions each follow the religion differently and that is probably why your parents aren’t as strict about certain rules. For example, in Uzbekistan, a Muslim does not eat pork, but is free to drink alcohol, likewise a Jew as well. This is taken from the cultural roots from invading leaders and also from the religious scholars that decide what is important to follow or not.

You don’t have to feel like you’re breaking any rules because where you’re from, the rules may not be enforced to the full extent. Although, the religious books tell us to act in a certain fashion or live in a certain way, we as individuals do not have to follow every single rule in the book. I know a lot of Muslims who don’t pray 5 times a day, not even once a day, but that’s because they don’t feel that they have to.

I hope this helped explain it to you. :)

Why Muslim have to cover themselves is because the Holy Qur’an says so. Both male and female must cover themselves in the most proper way as it is written in the book. For female, only face and palms must be shown. And why? because islam is leading their followers to avoid problems related to wearing ‘too open” outfits. It is believed that if a woman wear an outfits like tang tops and shorts will arouse males’ sexual desire. And this is forbidden in Islam. It is also suggested that by wearing covering outfit, a muslim will be able to keep herself from doing something nasty like seducing a male. This condition will also avoid Muslims from one of the most forbidden sin that is having free sex out side their marriage.

Muslims must wear the hijab because Allah ordered it. Muslims have two sources for guidance. The first and most important source is Qur’an, the revealed word of Allah. They they use Hadiths which is the sayings and traditions of the Prophet Muhammad who was chosen by Allah to be a role model for mankind. Here are two passages from the Qur’an that explain the hijab.   ”O Prophet, tell your wives and daughters and the believing women to draw their outer garments around them (when they go out or are among men). That is better in order that they may be known (to be Muslims) and not annoyed…” (Qur’an 33:59) “Say to the believing men that they should lower their gaze and guard their modesty; that will make for greater purity for them; and Allah (swt) is well acquainted with all that they do. And say to the believing women that they should lower their gaze and guard their modesty; and they should not display their beauty and ornaments except what must ordinarily appear thereof; that they should draw their veils over their bosoms and not display their beauty to their husbands…” (Qur’an 24:30-31) By covering themselves, they are evaluated for their intelligence and skills instead of looks and sexuality. Many women who cover are filled with dignity and self-esteem and are happy to be identified as a muslim woman. By wearing the headscarf the woman is concealing her sexuality but allowing her femininity to shine. Aside from that, it is pleasing to Allah and in return she earns blessings from wearing it.
