My dog, suggestions on how to get him to stop wandering?

So ever since I took my dog to play with my boyfriends dog he keeps getting into the neighbors yard to play with their dog. He has plenty of toys to play with out there and the kids play with him when it’s nice outside so I know he isn’t bored when he is out there for long periods of time. This happens even when you let him out for a couple of minutes to go to the bathroom. I tell my mom to put him on his harness and him up, but she never does when I’m not there. Anyone have any suggestions on how to get him to stop going over there. He has stopped digging because we put pepper down and found no new holes, but he is still getting over there! Any one else have any suggestions besides the harness since my mom never puts him on it ( I do when I’m at home, that’s why it’s never a problem when I’m there, lol)

you dont mention how old the dog is.. but if he is young, he is testing his limits. Sorry, but your dog is bored, plain and simple. Dogs will always prefer the company of other dogs over toys and kids. If the neighbors are obliging, maybe you can make play dates and share the responsibility … switch off the play date supervising…

you need to be responsible for your pet so he doesnt get hurt or into trouble. You cannot rely on others, then you have to step up. Sorry I dont mean to lecture.. but a dog is not going to do the right thing because of its decision making abilities.

He sounds very young… and most likely you wil lhave to supervise peepee until he behaves about staying on his side of the fence,,,and you need to find his access… you would be surprised what a dog can fit through..

Well, you could get another dog…but that can be impractical…dogs a “pack animals”…they are hard wired to associate with others of their kind…

You didn’t say how old he is, so it could be a “puppy” thing…but still it’s a bad habit…and I’m sure the neighbors might get tired of it.

If he’s not going under the fence, then he must be going over it…there are battery operated chargers (they run on D cell batteries)…and there are many different types of insulators to attach to most any kind of fence…you could run a “hot wire” around the top of the fence…you gotta explain to the kids not to touch it…I’ll guarentee you, tho…he’ll only need to touch it once…maybe twice, and the lesson is learned…you can unhook the charger most of the time after that…he’ll stay away from the fence all together. (if you see him getting braver about the fence, you just hook the charger up again for a couple of days…it’s just a clamp like a clothes pin)…I tell myself, that if a fence feels like “harsh” treatment…it’s nothing compared to the harshness of getting hit by a car, or tore up by another dog…

he is neutered we have another dog he is about 10 months old and is a chihuahua. I think it has to be his young age. he is a smart dog. thanks for all of your advice!

If he isn’t neutered, his chances of wandering are great compared to if he is neutered. Just something to think about if he hasn’t been.
