My 4 year old cat weighs 40 pounds, what do I do?

My cat is like a few years old.. And it weighs like 40 pounds! How can I get it to loose weight? I feed it canned food two times a day and there’s always dry food out.

Answer #1

make sure you a feeding your cat proper cat food. stuff from the supermarket is full of feathers, beaks, feet, skin, fishbones, heads etc. as well as a lot of filler (flour, rice etc) and not many nutrience, so the cat has to eat a lot more to get enough nutrience. I’ve found switching to stuff from the pet store (I feed them nutriscience) they need to eat a lot less food, so it works out to be cheaper anyway. stop with the wet food as its very high in fat, if you want to give them a treat try a table spoon of tinned tuna (get the people stuff, youll find its prob cheaper and again much better for them) also leave plenty of water out, not food. make sure you worm your cat regularly, as this can make them swollen and very hungry all the time. if your cat asks for food, try playing instead! get some dried/fesh cat nip, it will make them crazy and playful and you can give them some exercise.

oh man, your cat is living the dream!!! my buddy’s cat is 14 years old this month, and it’s been 30 pounds or so for about 10 years now. a fat cat is the only way a cat can be enjoyed. cats are really lame, unless they’re fat and lazy. try giving it some half and half. keep it fat, it’s the only way cats are fun.

Uhm twice a day? mine can barely finish one in three days. Maybe you should stop with the canned food entirely (apparently it isnt necessary unless they dont drink), and just give the cat dry food? also there is food that controls weight, so maybe switch or mix that food with your regular dry food?

40 pounds??? I think you better cut out 1 1/2 cans of his wet food, and portion out his dry…Weight loss is simply a matter of taking in less calories than what are expended during a day…and at 40 lbs, I imagine he spends most of his time sleeping.

Answer #5

get food with less fat and more nutrients. make sure it moves around. go for walks(yes I know its a cat) and feed it maybe once a day in the middle of the day.

Answer #6

You need to talk to your vet and get that cat on a diet. Seriously, you are really hurting your beloved pet by letting them be that much overweight.

Answer #7

Wet food is completely unnecessary and high in fat. Cut it out completely.

Feed him/her half a cup of dry food, twice a day. It doesn’t look like a lot, but cat’s stomachs don’t hold that much.

If she doesn’t go near the dry food, you can coat it with a teaspoon of wet food, but I wouldn’t.

Take the food away after mealtime.

My terrier is 21lbs and is dieting to get down to 15. I can’t imagine a cat weighing more than my dog. You need to do this for your cat’s life.

Answer #8

first of all don’t leave food out all day because that means your cat is probably eating throughout the whole day! Try taking away the dry food and give it a set amount 2 times a day but portion them, don’t just fill up the bowl with food. Then after a half hour take away the food. This should help. As for the canned food. Try cutting that out all together or if you want replace the dry food with wet.
