My 1 year old chihuahua won't stop humping

I recently adopted a 1 year old neutered chihuahua. I don’t know how long ago he was neutered. He humps everything he can , constantly. I normally wouldn’t make such a big deal, but I have three young children who are starting to ask questions. Is there anything I can do?

Answer #1

Thanks to both of you I will try both options. Yes I have 4 year old twins and a 1 year old. And yes I do have a female in the house! I should have thought about that. I’ll look at the library for books too. Tahnks so much!

Answer #2

If you have another dog in the house, he’s just trying to establish himself and his role in their “pack”. Once it’s settled who is dominant, he should settle down, aside from a reminder every know and then by whoever wins the dominant game ;)

Answer #3

It’s NOT about sex…it’s ALL about Dominance…he’s new, and the pack order is still being established…So, explain dogs, and how their body language works to your kids…you don’t even have to bring up the word sex.

I had a dog that was the same way, I tried squirting him with water in a spray bottle and things like that but the only thing that ever worked was to put him in a kennel with a stuffed animal and just letting him get it out of his system.

This can be a tough situation considering you have three young children under 10 I suppose? If they’re older then that than they are old enough to know.

But, there are several different reasons you’re dog may be doing the humping, which is really unnecessary to be doing if the dog’s Neutered. I know that if dogs don’t get enough exercise, or have a lot of energy, they are a lot more likely to “hump”. Or maybe your Chihuahua smells another uneutered Female in the area? My dog Nemo, 4 year old Male Pug likes to Hump sometimes, and it’s gross. Say “NO!” Firmly and if he listens, give him a treat like a Beggin Strip or a piece of beef or something like that. If he doesn’t cooperate, I’d try behavioral Lessons, or training. Maybe check out a book at the Library?

Whatever you do, DO NOT smack, or hit your Dog. It causes unwanted behaviors.
