How much does mutuality matter in life when it comes to people?

Looking for personal takes on this, do you feel that mutuality matters when it comes to, say , for example meeting people?

Answer #1

I have planned many weddings and counseled couples beforehand. I can tell you from my own experience that when it comes to meeting, dating and eventually establishing a relationship (romantic or not) it is the most important things in life that must be mutual for it to work.
It is interesting to be different and unique from one another, but finances, morals, religion, political views, those are some of the things that people generally have to have mutuality on. The less to argue upon, the better. But I think a diverse amount of knowledge and activities each individual can bring to the table to connect and inspire the other person to learn from them, is very appealing. As they say, opposites attract…but there has to be a basis or foundation of important ideals that they do have in common.

I totally agree with the comments you are talking about. I think of all you said is so true, and so very important to life, and to make relationships grow healthy. As individuals, and in relationships.

Answer #3

I remember learning about this in one of my social psychology classes. The most important factors in a lasting relationship were perceived equity and similarity. Contrary to popular belief, research shows that opposites do not in fact attract (and if they do attract, they don’t usually last long). And people like to feel as if they contribute equally to the relationship (in many different ways).
