should i use this medicine the doctor gave me?

The doctor told me to take Symbicort ( which is a inhaler) 4 times a day, but i’m not sure if i want to use it cause it can increase the risk of a asthma related death, ( which would be a sucky way to die). So i don’t think i want to risk my health or something like that, but should i use it?

Answer #1

I also use Symbicord. How on earth can it increase the risk of asthma related death if it actually prevents lung infections etc? If you have asthma you are suppose to use your medication EVERY DAY as prescribed, you should skip a dose and when the inhaler is finished you should go back to your doctor or get a repeat perscription.

Symbicord is also one of the asthma medications that doesn’t up your heart rate (unlike some inhalers) so it is safe and good to use when exercising.

Answer #2

Asthma medicine increases the risk of dying from asthma?

Answer #3

My daughter has asthma and I refuse to give her simbicort

Answer #4

Why? That is cruel. It is extremely tough not being able to breathe properly.

Answer #5

I didn’t say she’s not on any meds, she takes albuteral inhaler, and in her machine, and she takes singular

Answer #6

Of course, follow your prescription. Trust your doctor. Goodluck and hoping you get well :)

Answer #7

But make sure not to take an overdose o.o

Answer #8

Every medication has benefits and risks. While doctors are trained to determine if a medication’s benefits outweigh its risk in the end your health is your responsibility.

Symbicort and similar medications (Advair, Serevent, Foradil) did show higher rates of death from asthma complications than placebo. This risk is large enough that long acting bronchodilators like Symbicort now have black box warnings on the packages and the FDA recommends these medications only for patients who have asthma that can not be controlled by other medications.

It sounds to me like you need to discuss your treatment more with your doctor. You both should be on the same page. You should find out why this particular medication was selected. Sometimes doctors do get so used to prescribing a particular medication that they continue to even after new studies indicate lower efficacy or higher risk than previously thought.

Answer #9

uhm? it’s an inhaler. It would be very difficult to overdose on it.

Answer #10
