Loud earphones do cause damage… It may seem normal, but this is often because people get used to one sound setting and then increase the volume for more intensity. They then accustom to that volume and increase it again, and so on. Earphones deliver these sounds directly to the ear (quite unlike headphones), and so you have to be careful with using them.
If you are exposing yourself to sounds of over 100db, and doing so for long periods of time, you can cause damage to structures in the ear (e.g., stereocilia and the myelin coating of the auditory nerve), and evidence also suggests that you can cause damage to hearing-related brain structures (namely the cochlea nucleus). Damage you can cause in this way is permanent if you expose yourself to loud sounds for too long without letting your ears recover, so you should certainly be careful with those volume settings.
Good advice by yummeh. I Would like to add that if you also use your earphones in a noisy enviroment and if the earphones are not good at isolating noise then they would do more harm as most people will raise the volume to compensate for the external noise.
I advise you to get earphones that isolate noise in the form of silicone tips or foam tips. I am talking about noise isolation and not to be confused with noise canceling. Noise canceling are bad. They produce an electronic sound that your brain can’t hear to block the external noise but this sound is added to the music by the earphones.
A good high quality noise isolating earphone works like ear plugs. The foam or the silicone is the same as earplugs but have a hole in the middle to let the music out.
