How come our ears make a ringing sound?

Usually I’ll just be reading, and all of a sudden my ear will feel like it closes up and has a soft tone of a ring…I poke my ear and it fades..what causes it? Someone told me loud music in your ear or really any loud sound near your ear.

Perceiving sound that isn’t there is called tinnitus. Tinnitus is a condition that can be caused by many things: impacted ear wax, foreign objects, injuries, nerve damage, infections etc. By far the most common cause is exposure to loud noise. About 20% of people have some form of tinnitus ranging from slight to so maddening that it has driven people to take their own lives. When I was a musician I suffered from tinnitus; it is an occupational hazard for musicians. For me it took years but eventually it went away when I was no longer exposed to loud music for hours a day.

Oh ok, so basically it could be the ear wax, one of the causes I’ve been having and one of the worst sides in my ear as well. Though I haven’t been exposed to loud music, considering I don’t have a ipod or mp3 to have ear plugs in my ears hehe. Though I’m a mechanic and having loud disrupting noise circling could be as that too I suppose.

I’ve always noticed ringing in my ears if there is complete silence around me, and if I focus on it, it becomes rather deafening. Take a look at this http://funadvice.com/r/166mk8a1bnk
