Why do we learn all this information in school?

We learn all these things and once we’re finished with school we don’t use 80 % of the things we learned. Math (everyone) - adds, subtracts, and divides Reading (everyone) - reads, don’t have to write summaries or thoughts on stories/poems Science - Dissecting things, insect life.

Why can’t school be like college where you choose your majors/minors and not learn unnecessary things, that don’t or won’t apply to your life

Answer #1

The things you learn in school prepares you for college and future jobs. In a way, it helps you find out what things you like and dislike, what things you are good at and not good at before you pick what you want to do in life. As well it gives you skills that what you do in the future may possibly need.

You should understand how our brain works. It is constantly rewiring itself. It adds neural connections whenever we learn something or acquire a skill. Connections that are no longer needed slowly get pruned. The wider range of skills you learn in your youth the wider the range of possibilities you will have as an adult. When I was in high school we had majors and minors. My majors were in music and science; we still had to take all the other required classes though. I got news, in college as an undergrad you have core courses that make you learn all sorts of things beyond your majors or minors. You don’t get out of core courses until graduate school. As far as mathematics go, when different aspects of education were analyzed it turns out that the amount of mathematics studied was the best predictor of success. The more math you take the better your chances of being successful. I don’t know if this is because mathematics trains your mind to work better or if it is because mathematicians did the study but arguing it is fallacious requires a branch of math called logic so there is no escaping math.
