What does it mean to have a leaking heart valve and how do you treat it?

Answer #1

the heart contains “one way” valves to insure the blood is punped in the right direction. A leak means the valve is not seating when it closes and allows some of the blood to leak past it, this results in a lower blood flow from the heart.

If it is an intake valve, it will allow some of the blood to flow back out of the heart in the wrong direction when the heart beats. If it is an exit valve it will draw back some of the blood just pumped lowering the volume it actually pumps..

Sometimes a leaking valve can be repaired, but in worse cases it must be replaced. Discuss it with your heart specialist for the best option in your case

if it is repaired, what happens?

Answer #3

Who has the leaky valve? I had my Mitral valve repaired. You will need to find out from your doctor if you need it treated or not. At your age If the leak is very small then they may just leave it like that. But sometime in the future it will get worse and will need to be repaired. First thing they will do is an Echocardiogram. Is like a sonogram but on your heart. They will see how bad of a leak it is that way. The surgery these days is performed on the side of you rib cage for Mitral valves repairs. They will go on the side and go in between your ribs to reach your heart. Please be sure to have a good hospital do this procedure. Feel free to Funmail me if you need help or more details.
