Why does the US have one lawyer for every ten people?

According to the American Bar Association there are currently 1,116,967 lawyers practicing in the United States. That is approximately one lawyer for every 300 people, or approximately .36% of the total population. These statistics relate only to lawyers currently practicing and maintaining their licenses. There are far more with inactive or retired status.

Well, one lawyer for every 300 people is worse! :O What does it mean, and why is it like that? I don’t understand.

Hell it means that do look at someone wrong, you might get sued.

What do you mean that is worse? That’s not a bad average. It is probably higher than other countries (I would think 1 in 500 makes more sense), but what exactly are you having an issue with? Do you think it is too high or too low?

I guess I just don’t understand what it means. One lawyer for every 300 people? Why is it that way, what does it mean?

There are to many lawyers if you ask me. God if i had a penny for every girl in my school that wants to be “a prefessional lawyer” i’d be rich… Funny they want to be something that involves legal action when half of them do illegal things… hypocrites… oh look! there already on there way :D lol

It doesnt really mean that one lawyer is working with 300 people. It means that there’s 1 lawyer per 300 of the population. So if there was a tiny island with 300 people, and that was the ratio, there would be one lawyer. In a slightly bigger town of 600 people, there’s 2 lawyers, in a country of 18,000,000 people, that’s 60,000 lawyers, etc… it’s just the number of lawyers compared to the number of people in a place.
