isnt the medication Ativan supposed to help you not be so emotional?

Ativan does not do anything for depression or sadness and its main purpose is as a mild sedative for those suffering from anxiety. Since it is a benzodiazepene, you need to be careful with it to not become dependent on it. Your body will get use to the normal dose and you will require higher doses to get the same effect.

For depression please see your doctor about what choices are available. Some depression medications will also have side effects and their full effect will not be in full effect in one to two months after starting the medication.

Some of the newer types of antidepressants have fewer side effects, but at the same time are not approved by many medical insurance companies.

Prozac and Zoloft are almost certainly to be approved by most insurance companies and their generic are usually inexpensive, but they do have side effects. Side effects of both of this medications are difficulty enjoying sexual activities and with Zoloft there comes a need to always be eating and weight gain.

Another medication that treats depression is Wellbutrin. But you have to be careful and build it into your system as it is known to give people seizures if the medicine is not taken slowly at first.

The Wellbutrin generic is called Bupropion and you would need Bupropion XL. It is a slow release form of the medication that you take once a day. Zoloft and Prozac are also taken once a day.

These medications work on neurotransmiters in the brain and affect how the neurotransmitters fire up and get released.
