How can you get someone to stop self-medicating and get real help?

I know that they have to want to but how can you try and get them to see the light

Answer #1

The main thing is not to try to protect them from the consequences of their choices - an impulse that can be very difficult to restrain when it’s someone you care about. Beyond that, not much you can do except continue to be present to them as a caring, listening (but not “helping”) friend. I think it’s always good to state clearly at least once what you see them doing and what you think they need to do differently. After that, you have to use your own judgment. Some people might dig in their heels if they feel like you’re always on them about it; others might respond to some ongoing persuasion - or at least might not mind it until suddenly one day, for no apparent reason, the time is right for them. If the person is a reader, you could give her/him good information about the drŭgs they are using, addiction in general, or the local resources available to them, as well as some of the literature of recovery.

Answer #3

Some self med is the best way to treat many illnesses ….so i dont get the problem unless he is suffering more so than what a doc can offer, and of course way up the side effects of that legal stuff.
