Is this Big Brother?

California: Add thermostats to the list of private property the government would like to regulate as the state of California looks to require that residents install remotely monitored temperature controls in their homes next year. The government is seeking to limit rolling blackouts and free up electric and natural gas resources by mandating that every new heating and cooling system include a “non-removable” FM receiver. The thermostat is also capable of controlling other appliances in the house, such as electric water heaters, refrigerators, pool pumps, computers and lights in response to signals from utility companies. If contractors and residents refuse to comply with the mandate, their building permits will be denied - Is it ok with you that the government wants to come into your home to control things ?

Answer #1

Americans are too complacent. everyone just sits accepts the rights that are infringed under the umbrella of national security. it is always someone else who gets their door busted in, so no one cares. sooner or later, though, they will get around to affecting your life and it will be too late to stop them.

Answer #2

This is simply part of the “evolution” we’ve been watching for the last 25 years…little by little, people give up their rights…AND their responsibility to the “greater good”…and allow the government to tell them how they will live. Which came first? The chicken or the egg? It’s getting so that I can’t even tell, anymore.

oaklandathletics…Arnold just SEEMS like a democrat…LOL…I suppose on the left coast, he is a Repulican, all things being relative.

Answer #3

Actually oaklandathletics the Governor of California is a Republican.

I have a hard time getting too worked up about this California code. A certain area is in danger of having a brown- or black-out so everyone’s thermostat gets turned up so they don’t loose power.

Considering we have a “Patriot Act” (I doubt this is the sort of thing real patriots would fight for) where our 4th Ammendment is basically suspended by allowing our Federal government search our home, person, and records without a warrent or probable cause it is hard for me to get too worked up about the state of California being able to mess with thermostats.

Answer #4

yes, let’s get “whipped up” about a monitor on thermostats in cali but keep quiet about the patriot act.

Answer #5

I would say it is big brother. How long will it be before there is a microphone added.

Answer #6

yeah right. that is the overall democratic goverment plan. (notice our governer of CA is a democrat) the democratic government wants to be in total control of everything and give you no breathing space. don’t let them control what happens to your house because soon it will be more like controling every move you make. Stay strong and don’t let the government take control of you

Answer #7

California is like it’s own country… you can bet that’d never happen somewhere like Texas.
