I think my friend is a bully!

I am having some problems in school. During the beginning of the year, I got into trouble for bullying this one girl. But, I hardly did anything to hurt her. My friend, Katie, had been calling her fat, ugly, sl*t, ect. All I did, was sort of laugh it off a bit and walked away. Although, it was partially my fault by guilt of association. Katie once again got us both into trouble when she called this one boy a teddy bear. (The teacher had complimented him by saying he was as kind and gentle as a teddy bear). I joined in but stopped the moment I could see signs of him getting upset. Katie took this as a GOOD sign and turned up the heat. Finally, he slammed the table and yelled profanity. Teachers rushed to his aid and we were sent to the principal’s office. My wonderful teacher has been incredibly supportive of me, but I am worried that if I hang around Katie any longer things will get even worse. Please, it would be great if someone would tell me whether or not I should stop being Katie’s friend.

I think you can still be Katie’s friend. It’s good that you are recognizing when bullying is going too far. Now that you’ve stopped yourself I think you can stop Katie too. When she does it, turn to her, “Hey katie, I think that’s enough.” Or something to that effect to make her think twice. If she snaps back at you, then I think it would be a good time to cut off the friendship.
