Too soon for puppy shots?

I asked a pet store when can I get my puppies his first shot because there is a mobile vet coming on saturday around my neighborhood really cheap but my puppy is 5 weeks today and the lay said it is to soon what should I do ? should I seek another opinion like a vet or just wait 3 weeks?

Answer #1

Always get a second opinion when the first comes from a questionable source…which a “Pet Store” is…This is what is called “better safe than sorry”…

Ditto to what amblessed said…there is a window of time for EVERY puppy that it is susceptable to Parvo and Distemper…and that is based the titers passed down from the mother…

“For dogs and many other mammals as well, the immunity given by the colostrum loses its affect sometime around the FIFTH WEEK OF AGE. Unfortunately this is also the time when most puppies are placed into their new homes and exposed to a variety of new environments.

It is highly recommended that new puppies visit a veterinarian as soon as possible. The veterinarian will then educate the owner on the needs of the new puppy, look for congenital defects as well as look for signs of parasitic or viral infections. If all looks well, the puppy is then started on what is commonly called its “puppy shots.”

DO GET a second opinion…I believe that the VET will immunize this pup…

Wait a for a week to two weeks…My pup got her shots too early & got very sick…

Answer #3

my puppy had hers at 7 weeks then I brought her home at 8 then the week after she went to the evts and had another one then she has her final one at 12 weeks. I would always speak to a vet not a pet store.

Answer #4

1st shots are usually given at 5 weeks, for parvo ect…there are actually 12 different vaccinations in these shots that help protect your pups…thats what my vet told me when I brought my puppies in…usually its 5 wks, 8 wks, 12 wks, for shots

Answer #5

I don’t think it’s too soon, at all…Take the pup to the Mobile Vet…tell THEM how old he is…I’d trust a Vet to know the right answer, LONG before I’d trust the petstore…they aren’t noted for the great care they give their pups.

Frankly, I think they will tell you that he is most certainly old enough!!

There’s no sense in getting a second opinion - the puppy is too young…8 weeks is the minimum age, although some vets will vaccinate at 6 weeks.

5 weeks = too young

Answer #7

We start pups at 8 weeks, A puppy this young should not even be at a pet store, They should not even leave there mother until 8 weeks of age and in some states that is a law. Second if this 5 week old pup came from a pet store it’s chances of already having a virus is very high. I would personally would take this puppy to a vet for a good health check up and let the doctor tell you when you should start the vaccines, This pup is to young to be in places where other dogs have been, it is not even safe. Please go to a vet hospital and put the puppy in a carrier and don’t let it walk around the lobby or the grass outside, Get this pup checked out, and find out if the pet store is breaking the law by selling puppies of this age.

Ok the puppy can have it’s first shot at 5 1/2 weeks old but no sooner and should actually be given at 6 weeks. Ideally 6, 9, 12 and 15 weeks. 8 weeks is too old and that is a risk. There are possibly vaccines on the market that a Vet may vary his timing but I know that all puppies should have that first shot no later than 6 weeks of age and no earlier than 5 1/2 weeks. Do not miss a shot and follow your Vets instructions to the letter.

Take your pup to the mobile Vet and have them look him over and go by what they say. They are qualified to make a decision on your puppy and tell you a good plan to follow.

No puppy should ever be placed in a home before 6 weeks of age and ideally (depending on the breed) 8 weeks of age. Normally the larger the breed 6 weeks will do, 8 weeks is best and the smaller the breed 8 to 12 weeks is best.

Answer #11

The age at which puppies can effectively be immunized (protected) is proportional to the amount of antibodies the puppy received from its mother. High levels of maternal antibodies present in the puppies’ bloodstream will block the effectiveness of a vaccine. When the maternal antibodies drop to a low enough level in the puppy, immunization by a commercial vaccine will work. http://www.peteducation.com/article.cfm?c=2+1648&aid=960
