How to teach dogs who have been in a cage their whole life?

Please help, I am sick and tiered of my uncles dogs being in a small cage all day, they only get out 2 times a day, and less then 15 mins and then put back in the cage, he doesnt want to have them to be in their cages all day but he just doesn’t have time, one is a german shepered and the other is a black lab, I feel so bad for them I have decided to train them this summer, please help I need some tricks it will be hard but I want them to be able to know they dont have to live that way. No dog should have to.my uncle dosnt show hes the dominant dog, he just acts like hes a friend to them so they have no leader. I just want these dogs to live life to the fullest and living in a cage all their life is not right at all.((( sometimes they are in their cages so long they go to the bathroom in their cages and end up with it all over them, thats no way for a dog to live ! :( please help )))

Start out taking only one dog at a time. Two adult dogs…very active adult dogs at that, will be hard to get them to listen if you take both. So you’re going to work with them, one at a time. Walks in the beginning to build up their muscle mass…I’m sure they have been weakened by the long hours and days and months of doing virtually nothing.

The teaching of obedience will make walks be pleasant as they grow stronger. Sit, down, stay…those are necessariy lessons.

For the beginning, tho…I’d do short walks (like 4 to 8 blocks)…to start. Then a small sit lesson…these dogs are gonna LOVE YOU…

Please keep in touch here, and we’ll do our best to lead you thru this adventure…as things come up…and they will as the dogs get healthier.

Your uncle is not a good pet owner…sorry. It is cruel to leave a dog in a kennel for such long periods of time that the go to the bathroom in the kennel. How horrible for them I applaud what you are going to try to do and that you understand they do not deserve to stay in a kennel almost all the time.

Walks will be good for them. Fetch (if they will)…actually anything that stretches their bodies and lets them move.

Are they house trained? If so, why does your uncle keep them kenneled all the time? Perhaps he can be convinced to let them out and if not perhaps he can be convinced to let them go to owners who will properly and humanely care for them.

wow you guys thank you so much you have no idea how much it makes me feel when I know people are wiling to help, the rest of my family has somewhat given up, the dogs are not HOUSE TRAINED :( and that is why he never lets them out hes always at work, but I wont give up on them its not their fault their the way they are.

First, you could try taking them out for long walks so they get used to being outside of the cage. After that, when you know for sure they wouldn’t run away, let them roam around freely. Then start working on tricks, like fetching and such.

If they’re cooped up all day most of the time, then they’re probably not used to being outside for long much. Then again, I’ve never had a dog haha
