How to play an open string on guitar??

So I was researching on the internet on how to play an open string on my guitar. So I went to Yahoo and found this answer: Open strings” mean strings that aren’t fretted - that means you haven’t pushed any of them down against the fretboard with your left hand. Im not getting what the person is trying to say here, im not in guitar lessons ( I will be in a few months.) but im sorta trying to teach myself a song at the moment and need to be able to play and “ open string” so if you could break this down into the simplest form possible that would be great! :) thanks
