How do I get my horse to do flying lead changes? Say when he has the wrong lead and I slow him down a little bit, he changes it automatically, sometimes he does half a flying lead change, and he hardly does full ones, I've heard that if your just cantering around, and you pretend to go one way, and then at the last second you go the other way and he can possibly change it, do you know if this works? Please help! I need the changes by sunday for my show!
when your horse does that it much better to change to a trot then go back to a canter after a second. This simple lead change will help you train your horse the right way it change leads. if you wanna learn flying changes then practice going into a small jump going one way and que for a lead change in the air. Also remember that your horses hip has to be pushed inside to pick up the right lead or he'll be thrown off balance and not pick it up easily. As far as your quick turning to get a lead, thats not a good idea. I sometimes try and get away with throwing my horse into the canter like that but I get in major trouble with my trainer. it throws them off balance and teaches them to run into the canter instead of picking it up correctly.
every horse is different. my horse is constantly in the wrong lead @ shows but I drop down deep into the saddle (while keeping posture) and I give him the que 9say the right lead, I give him that que) and he makes the transition... I hope I helped
