How long before/after heat do I need to keep my dogs separated?

I have a 4 mo. old male chihuahua and a 3 mo old female chihuahua. How long before/after the female goes into heat do I need to keep them separated so they don’t have puppies?

Answer #1

normally female dogs don’t go into heat until they are at least 6 months til one year. males reach sexually maturity at 6 months as well. I ‘m not so sure about how long you have to wait though… sorry

Thanks. I can’t get him neutered for another 2 months I think so I just want to be prepaired in case she goes into heat before that!

Answer #3

Dogs are in heat for 3 weeks. First week going into heat, second week in heat, 3rd week going out. Keep them separated from the minute you see she is in heat, and keep it that way for the whole 3 weeks (mother Nature isn’t on the same clock as humans, so to ensure no pups…separate for the entire time).

Why not take the male in and get him fixed while the female is in heat? Then do your female after she’s done…and live a life free of separations and avoiding puppies?
