How does a person inherit 21-trysomy?

Answer #1

In most cases, Down’s Syndrome is not inherited, it’s just the luck of the draw. But in a couple of cases it can be.

There is a mixed form of Down’s in which some of the cells have the extra chromosome, and others don’t. This form, (known as mosaic) is prone to being inherited. Someone who has the mosaic form might have no noticeable symptoms.

Mother’s with Down’s Syndrome have a 50% chance of giving birth to a child with the syndrome. No-one knows the odds for fathers with Down’s Syndrome, since there is only 1 known case of a father with Down’s Syndrome resulting in live birth.
