How do you check a rifle to see if it's safe?

How do you rsp a rifle (safety check it)? All I know already is put the safety on, then pull the bolt back, then I check to see if there’s no magazines, but then what do I do?? Don’t worry I’m not wishing to kill anyone, it’s for my test at cadets.

If it has a detachable magazine, remove it. If it is a tube fed rifle, you’ll have to work the action for each round loaded. Open the bolt and hold it open. (be prepared to drop a cartridge by doing this.) Look in the chamber (the back side of the barrel.)

you’ve pretty much got it.

the only thing I would add is if your rifle is semi automatic you would need to drop the magazine and then lock the bolt back which would also eject any cartridge in the chamber and would allow you to grip the rifle and visually inspect the chamber to insure a cartridge is not stuck and that the rifle is unloaded.
