How do I get my chinchilla to trust me?

I’ve had a chinchilla for about a week but he dosent trust me and when I let him out it takes hours to get him back in his cage anybody have any ideas how I can get him do trust me or come to me?

Answer #1

get him to come near you with a treat then if he comes to u, pet him and make him feel safe. it should work if you do it enough. but if it doesnt then I cant help u.

Answer #2

Try to give him food then pet him pick him up. Do it in the morning and in the night and soon he will start cooming up to u!!!

Answer #3

Time is the key…Do they have chinchilla treats? Food goes a long way in developing trust in animals…and men, for that matter…:)

Answer #6

Do you know your Pet? How many books have you read this year on Chinchillas ? Visit you local Library and see what the Pet Section has on Chinchillas. You should always own at least one good reference book on your pet. I would not buy from a pet store that sold a pet and did not offer a great book on training, feeding, health and history of the animal.

Do some internet search, but the internet seems to give you just general or buried bleeps of info. You must have a good book. Can’t make it to the Library and the Pet store or breeder let you down? Go to Amazon or Allibis and order you a book on Chinchillas.

But Time, Love and Food are always a good rule of thumb!

Answer #7

Well have him in your cage and call him and \if he comes get him a treat and do the same thing outside of the cage

Answer #10

My chin was give to me I had no clue!!! She was scared and so was I for that matter!! My brother came home for the weekend and he just picked her up and we played with her in the bathroom. After he left my 9 year old and I put her ball up to the cage and she would jump right in now when we take her out she gets in her ball and we take her in the bedroom and let her go she jumps and plays and is very jealious. We decided to get a male for her and he wasn’t handled at all so we are still letting him get use to things. We have had him about 2 months they have started playing together now and he will come to us when he is outand jump on our lap and sometimes he’ll let us rub his nose. But he still has his moments he is scared it takes time. Let him get to know you just sit there and talk to him and let him come out on his own.
