How can I stop fighting with my Mom?!

Me and My mom have never had a great relationship. From the time I can remember my mom and I have always argued and butted heads..She still yells at me like i’m a child..I have a daughter of my own and one on the way..My daughter has started to become scared to visit Grandma because she flies off the handle very easily..One time she got irrate because my daughter and her two cousins were coloring in their coloring books at the dining room table..Seriously!! Crazy right? How do I end this…I don’t want my daughter to grow up scared of her..The only way I know to deal, is not to visit her or talk to her, these are the only times we are not fighting..Please I need advise..Please help!! Thank you

Dear peepers_690, It takes two to argue. When your mother flies off the handle nothing says you have to react to her. Lets take the situation where the kids are colouring at the table. She got upset probably because the table is old and worth a fortune, they were also colouring the table??? If there was a reason in her mind then you need to know this so calmly ask what the problem is. If she is yelling again calmly ask her to lower her voice. If she cannot comply to your requests to get herself under control then leave. Take your daughter and go. This teaches her you will not put up with this behaviours as well as teaching your daughter that she does not have to stay and listen to grandmother yelling and being unreasonable. Be a good role model for your daughter and teach her how to deal with your mother. Sue…good luck

Wow. I wouldn’t purposefully put my daughter in a scary and abusive situation on purpose. Would you do that to your daughter if this woman wasn’t your mother?

I cut my mother out of my life when I was 18 years old. It was the best decision. Cut her off. Do not teach her how to deal with your mother. Teach her instead how to not have unhealthy and abusive people in her life.
