How can I stop being afraid?

Ever since an incident I had almost a year ago, I can’t stop being afraid. Someone tried braking into my house when I was home alone once, and I’ve been terrified ever since. I hate being alone, and I hate when It’s time to go to sleep. I always think I hear noises, and it’s affecting my sleep. I stay up hours into the night trying to convince myself not to get up and check. I’m tired of being afraid. How can I get better?

Answer #1

One thing you should know is that most break-ins occur during the daytime and not so much during the night/wee hours of the morning. Why? Most people work day shifts and criminals don’t want to break in and steal your possessions when you are in the presence. During the day it’s easy for them to get away with their crimes, because the residents of houses are usually working or at school. Although this isn’t always the case I feel safer at night because my father told me I’m less likely to face disaster.. {He is a retired police officer}

ALWAYS. ALWAYS. make sure the doors and windows are locked so no one can get in. You should talk to your parents about getting an alarm system set up. My best friend has an alarm system and it works great. If all else fails you could try adopting a guard dog or talking to a counselor. ;)

emmalism3568 has given you some great suggestions. Sometimes an alarm is all someone needs to feel better. Otherwise, I would suggest you talk to a counselor. I’ve had a few people come to me with the same sort of issues you’re having, so it is quite common. The problem is that the more you engage in avoidant behaviors (for example staying up at night, repeatedly checking doors and windows, or always having someone with you), the worse the problem is going to get.

Answer #3

Get a Brink alarm system! Then ask your parents if you can have a friend over when its time to be by yourself, and if you think you hear things then get some pepper spray then go check.

Answer #4

Maybe ask your parents to get you a security thing that you put in your house so if a person breaks into your house the alarm will sound. My friend had someone break in to their house and the police came and suggested the alarm thing it really did help them

Answer #5

well first, make sure all your doors are locked! try to get your mind off being home alone, like sleep with the tv on. you should always have your phone around just in case. your not completely over the incident that happened about a year ago or w/e, maybe you should try counceling if it’s that much of a problem? you should tell your parents about how your feeling about the whole being alone situation

Answer #6

Thank you everyone. I feel a tad more safer knowing that most break-ins happen during the day. Thanks so much!!

Answer #7

talk to your parents about having a friend come over when your alone or talk about getting a pet that would make you feel better about being home alone or if you dont have a cell phone talk them into getting you a cell phone
