How anyone can call themselves Christian yet support war?

I don’t understand how America can consider itself a Christian country when it’s constantly at war/threatening war with some country or another. One of the ten commandments is “thou shalt not kill” isn’t it? I don’t get how anyone can call themselves a christian and then want mass murder.. Does it not count as murder if you kill lots of people and they aren’t american? Just intrested to see how people justifying this.

Palin is Christian. Three months before she was thrust into the national political spotlight, Gov. Sarah Palin was asked to handle a much smaller task: addressing the graduating class of commission students at her one-time church, Wasilla Assembly of God. Speaking before the Pentecostal church, Palin painted the current war in Iraq as a messianic affair in which the United States could act out the will of the Lord.

“Pray for our military men and women who are striving to do what is right. Also, for this country, that our leaders, our national leaders, are sending [U.S. soldiers] out on a task that is from God,” she exhorted the congregants. “That’s what we have to make sure that we’re praying for, that there is a plan and that that plan is God’s plan.”

Her speech in June provides as much insight into her policy leanings as anything uncovered since she was asked to be John McCain’s running mate.

ALSO Religion, however, was not strictly a thread in Palin’s foreign policy. It was part of her energy proposals as well. Just prior to discussing Iraq, Alaska’s governor asked the audience to pray for another matter – a $30 billion national gas pipeline project that she wanted built in the state. “I think God’s will has to be done in unifying people and companies to get that gas line built, so pray for that,” she said.

Palin’s pastor Preached “What you see in a terrorist – that’s called the invisible enemy. There has always been an invisible enemy. What you see in Iraq, basically, is a manifestation of what’s going on in this unseen world called the spirit world. … We need to think like Jesus thinks. We are in a time and a season of war, and we need to think like that. We need to develop that instinct. We need to develop as believers the instinct that we are at war, and that war is contending for your faith. … Jesus called us to die. You’re worried about getting hurt? He’s called us to die. Listen, you know we can’t even follow him unless you are willing to give up your life. … I believe that Jesus himself operated from that position of war mode. Everyone say “war mode.” Now you say, wait a minute Ed, he’s like the good shepherd, he’s loving all the time and he’s kind all the time. Oh yes he is – but I also believe that he had a part of his thoughts that knew that he was in a war.”

Yet there are many, many, wonderful Christians that I know are opposed to war. Religion is a mixed bag. Some use it to defend and justify horrible acts and some don’t.

Man is the religious animal. He is the only religious animal that has the true religion – several of them. He is the only animal that loves his neighbor as himself and cuts his throat if his theology isn’t straight.

in christianity, a JUST war is one not only to be fought, it MUST be fought. that is the belief. like religion is good mentioned the old testament, where king David slaughtered thousands at a time to establish christianity..the old testament, seems to me, is just a chronicle of war…thats how you can be a Christian and support war

Answer #4

Actually territory along with pride & honor some of the time has more of a play when it comes to war. But when it comes to Christanity, over the corse of history, yeah, overall it’s the religion.

Answer #5

America can consider itself a Christian country

It doesn’t… but SOME people like to assume it is… to make themselves feel better about living here.

Answer #6

Are you kidding? Read the Old Testament, and the book of Revelation. God loves war, especially in the Middle East! If we fight hard enough, we might be able to bring back Jesus!

Answer #7

A country whose population is mostly christian is different from a christian country - otherwise, America would also be a “white country”, and a “female country”.

Answer #8

Thank you “religionisgood”! I completely agree, if you aren’t christian read up a bit, I think you’d actually be surprised that’s it’s not as simple as it seems.

Answer #9

America is a Christian country?

I am jewish. Should I move, should I wait for the evangelical storm troopers to knock on my door? What?

Answer #10

It just shows the curreption of christians. Remember the crusades? Christians killed thousands just because they didn’t believe in Jesus.

Answer #11

One thing religion tends to encourage is a very black and white view of things. If someone does things you disagree with, well, they’re Bad, and you’re Good. No further justificaiton required. It’s okay to go kill them, because they’re Bad.

The real world, of course, is much more nuanced than that. It has very few psychopaths who really are ‘evil’ for the sake of it, and many many more people of varying dispositions and diametrically opposed viewpoints.

Answer #12

I’m glad someone said it.

Religions CAUSE wars. The war we’re in right now? It’s about religion.

You know the people we’re fighting? They would like nothing more than to blow themselves up and take as many of their enemies with them as possible, because their religion says that it’s okay, and if they actually do succeed in killing others in the name of their god, they will be rewarded.

Answer #13

I actually couldn’t agree more with the last statement. Man is a warring animal. People say that most wars are religious, but if you take a look at most of them, one side generally gains one of three things: Land, Resources, and/or Prestige(infamous at times, but recognition as a power, nonetheless). If Religion were wiped out, you would just find another way to rally the people.

And then, of course, someone would just come along and create some new religions sooner or later…

Answer #14

you’re joking right? I’m assuming you didn’t read the bible, if so you’ve yet to comprehend it.

“The Lord is a man of War!” Exodus 15:3

If Christians were not for war then there would be no such thing until about a decade ago. Holy crusades, witch burnings, slaughter, sacrifices.

& News Flash, america isn’t a christain country. Our founding fathers were Free Masuions. Its mixed, Christanity may be the top rleigion for now in america, but other ones are growing quite rapidly.

& does it count as murder when the plans crashed into the twin towers & pentagon killing thousands!

Answer #15
