hey. well, if your walls are plaster, like most are, it’s because if something has most likely been spilt on the wall no matter how much you scrub the scent (although very minor, not to a cat though) is still there. Or it could also be an attractant in the wall paint.

Have any other pets? a lot of animals just judge by their smell, so maybe the smell of another animal in the house makes him want to ‘make his mark’ or w/e.
