utopia, I agree but I disagree. Yes we have a certain responsibility to our pets but have you ever heard of the saying “You don’t own a cat, a cat owns you.” There is a reason why cats were worshipped by the ancient Egyptians. We cannot control our pets, especially cats. We can to a certain degree but you forget they have their own minds and their own desires. If a cat would prefer to stay inside all the time, fine if that’s the way the cat wants it. I must sound like a lunatic letting my pets do as they please but it just shows that I have respect for my pets. I am in no way implying that you do not. And we can’t protect our pets from harm. You obviously would like to believe that illusion.

And rock3rtru, I’m sorry for your loss. I too have had a cat run over but at the end of the day they don’t live as long as us and he was bound to pass at some point in your lifetime, that is of course saying that you do not get run over or something. Enjoy life as it comes, mourn it as it passes but rejoice in the knowledge that they are in a better place and look forward to the future.

there is nothing wrong with letting a cat go outside, it is better for their mental health and fits with the five freedoms better them leaving them inside, but oddblack remember that what is done is done, nothing can change it, there are no ifs or buts. I do know how you feel because my cat (I had a very strong bond with her) was hit by a car and no the reason she was hit was because the prick of a driver was speeding, so amazingly enough remember it was the driver fault he should have his eyes open and be sticking to the god damn speed limit but then again humans where always crap. I hope this helps and trust me it was not your fault, you luved her and if you knew you wud of never of let that happen. just remember she is always with u. take care x

As pet owners it is our responsibility to protect our pets from harm. Allowing a pet to roam free is not better for it’s physical health.

If you can’t protect your animal from harm, then don’t get a pet.

when a cat lives outside it’s life is almost cut in half, you need to remember this for the future. I am sorry for your loss, but if you do have a pet it should be protected and watched by you. I see this all the time with dogs in heat and they roam around and get hit, same thing for cats, they get in fights, wild animals, traps, cars, illnesses. you need to use caution next time.

utopia, I have met many people like you who believe they are correct and I am taught that pet owners will believe that they know best but everyone that I know or met that is educated in animal welfare and health would quite gladly disagree with what you have just said, yes we have to protect our animals but we arent meant to restrict them, they have their own lives to lead as well we cannot dictate everything they do so please dont question me again, I would much prefer it if you did not. thank you

Sorry for your loss, but if it weren’t for your cat being outside, he’d still be alive. You’ve no one to blame but yourself.

People simply need to learn to keep their cats in the house where they are safe. I hope this is a learning experience for you.
