Do hedgehogs have a lot of health issues?

alrighty, (did I really just say ‘alrighty’?) I’ve wanted to get a hedgehog for a while now. I’ve owned about every animal you can imagine from rattlesnakes to sugargliders, to horses and hedgies just caught my attention. I have some problems though, I know that insects are a huge part of their diets and should be given to them live, but I have serious issues with crickets and meal worms and those are the two main kind!!! I just can’t get over it, they scare the hell out of me!! lol. I know I would be a good owner but the whole feeding process if just SO confusing! 23% of this 87% of that none of this tons of that, I can’t keep up. it seems it would take at least 2 hours to make dinner for them alone!! Is it really that hard? Do hedgies get sick easy? I see lots of warnings about illness in hedgies and I don’t want to get one if it will end up dieing in a few month or cost me $200 bucks for medication. are they worth it? And biting is last, I’m scared of being bitten. Like all people if I’m bite I naturally jerk my hand away, and that can hurt me AND the hedgie. How do I over come this? how bad does it hurt to be bitten? Do they bite a lot? PLEASE HELP! I’ve done a lot of research so I know about hedgies, I have friend that own some, I have tons of experience with all types of animals so PLEASE don’t tell me to wait till I’m ready, I’m ready!!

Answer #1

They have real problems with fleas and ticks - they can’t clean them off in any way, and you can’t comb them, obviously. I’d ask a vet about appropriate parasite treatments.
