Is it normal for a long, heavy period when going off Depo?

I stopped taking my Depo shots about three months ago and now I have been having a heavy, painful period for over two weeks now! The thing that I am most worried about is that the blood is now coming out brown and very dark. I don’t want to gross anyone out, but I am concerned about the color being so brown and so dark. Does anyone know if that is a problem or if that is just a normal process when you stop taking the Depo?

Hi,

A quick search online shows me that you’re not the only one.

The brown and black discharge is basically old blood.

If you read at the site of Depo it says 3 to 18 months…Unless you are bleeding heavily, soaking up constant maxi pads, then what you are having is normal it is maybe just spotting. It will eventually stop but you might want to see your gyno and see what they say. Not sure if you want to get pregnant soon but going on the birth control pill for a while might help your system get regular and back to normal. It takes 6-9 months after last shot for depo to leave your body completely.

Good luck.

I stopped taking it because my blood pressure was getting very high and I felt like the Depo was the cause, I have been off of it for about three months now and my blood pressure is back to normal, I need to find a different kind of birth control because I do not want to get pregnant, but we don’t have sex that often anyways and we are careful when we do. Maybe like once a month is all sometimes we go for two or three months without having sex. He has been very depressed lately.
