How can I improve my posture?

My shoulder blades are at an angle so the they are “shooting” out of my back so it looks kind of weird, on another note this makes me seem bigger whenever I’m wearing a shirt which ticks me off because I used to be big and I worked hard to get rid of it…anyway the reason my shoulder blades are angled is because my shoulders are out in front and a little lower than where they should be. So is there any way I could fix that?

I did Karate for about 4years and it helped me a LOT with my posture since I was not the balarina type of girl :P

OK, let’s first of all risk making things a bit worse ….. ( just for a minute or two ), ….. so you fully understand what is possibly going WRONG at the moment.

Stand close to a wall in your room, heels about four inches away from the wall and allow yourself to SLUMP back against the wall. Try to feel a bit miserable as though life was not worth living. Look down at your toes as though totally lacking in confidence and unable to look the rest of the world in the eye. Let out a weary sigh and hang your head in total dejection.

Now let’s try to fix things, by making everything look and seem a bit better both internally and externally, if I say things that you don’t really believe, just PRETEND that it’s true for the moment and get to BELIEVE it sometime soon.

Take a DEEP BREATH and prepare yourself to meet the rest of the world eye-to-eye. Step back with your right foot so that your heel meets the wall. Raise your head and eyes to focus your gaze on the opposite wall at around the head height of a person your own size or slightly bigger. Make sure the palms of your hands face inwards towards the sides of your thighs so you could extend your thumbs to point them towards that imaginary person on the opposite wall. Imagine it is someone you are REALLY PLEASED to be meeting again, SMILE and BREATHE IN even deeper, while moving your shoulders backwards as if trying to clench a coin between your shoulder blades.

Clench your buttocks, move your hips slightly forwards and move your left foot back to the wall so that both your feet are now together with both heels touching the wall.

You’ve more or less got it now, so clench your fists, give that imaginary person on the opposite wall a double “THUMBS UP SIGN”, elbows close in next to your body and say “YES” in response to the challenge the world is setting before you.

If it seemed to be working for you, remember the following:

Head up, Fill the lungs with a deep breath, Look the world straight in the eyes, Shoulders back (to grip that imaginary “coin” between the shoulder blades). Tight buttocks and hips thrust forwards. Back straight as a ram-rod.

Finally: remember a lot of it is to do with positive attitude.and personal confidence.

For your stomach, try to make your belly button touch your spine. Keep your head balanced above your neck, not ahead of you. Try not to have your shoulders in front of your body, but keep them back. Keep your butt under you, not behind you. And have confidence :)

Even though I’m sitting, I couldn’t help sitting up straighter while reading all that, didn’t even realize until I was finished.

Nice to know my observations actually have an effect on people. Thanks for commenting - it is appreciated.
