You start off by sitting in a chair in your house.

Do you have a small ball or tennis ball or even a soft toy that he likes?

You say “ready?” and you throw the toy a bit in the air and you praise him if he catches and even if he misses it, you say “good boy” You say, “bring it here” or “give it to me” so that he understands to return it to you so he can play again. You work on this and eventually he will be catching the toy and bringing it back.. When he starts catching the toy regularly and returning it to you, then you can start throwing things outside and having him bring them back to throw again.

This process has worked with my dogs, and it is not an overnight success story. The training takes a little time but they do get the hang of it very quickly and have fun doing so!

not all dogs will play fetch. you normally have to teach them when they are puppies. helps if the dog has retriever in it. but you might not be able too… balls that whistle are supposed to help… thats how we trained my friend rotweiler to fetch!

We have 2 dogs. Both are over 3 years. One fetches the other couldn’t care less and chases flies instead. We had one and she was 20 before she died and she wouldn’t play if you hung a pork chop around your neck and ran around with cookies in you shorts. Some dogs just won’t. But maybe yours is a late bloomer. Keep trying. You might be the doing the fetching for a while at first. Good Luck.

I agree with the advisor’s tips. However I must add that not every dog in the world is cut out to play fetch, has the patience to do so, or wants to. Keep trying, but dont beat yourself up over it, he loves you even if he doesn’t share his toys.
