Female pug puppy
I have just got a female pug puppy. She is now 12 weeks old but only weighs 800 grams. I took her to my vet for a health check and he is very concerned that she is too small and not developing properly. He says she is a quarter of the weight she should be. He now wants to do tests as he thinks there is something wrong with her. She only gained 70grams in one week. This has really worried me. Do some pugs develop slowly and get to an average sized adult or will she always be small and have serious health problems?
I am SO SORRY! that is tough…the breeder should have a health warrenty on her pups, as hard as it is for you,she needs to either
- take the puppy back and refund your money
- give you a NEW puppy with a guarentee of good health AND SHE SHOULD EITHER WAY… 1.Pay for your vet bills so far and if she was a good breeder (after the tests are confirmed & it IS possitive) should let you keep this puppy being you BOTH have attached to each other and still give you a refund or new puppy since this one will not live a full life as expected. I am SO SORRY again and PLEASE do keep me informed again. Thanks!
I saw the vet today. He weighed her and she had only gained 70grams in 2 weeks. He is now wanting to monitor her for a while longer. He has said that she will only get to about 2kgs when fully grown. He thinks there is a problem with her liver and said that after monitoring for a while longer he will then do tests. He feels that if it is the liver then she will live a short life. I am really upset by this and nothing is for certain until the tests are done. I feel he must be almost 100% right on this as otherwise he wouldn’t have said anything. I am going to contact the breeder again. I feel the breeder has conned me as she should have known by experience if the pup wasn’t developing and shouldn’t have sold her to me as I have become so attached to her.
Certainly if the Vet is concerned, then you do need to be concerned, also…even the best of the best of breeders can have one pup with an anomoly…There could be something wrong with her digestive system, or another internal organ, that is keeping her from “using” all her food…If you signed a puppy contract, then you almost HAVE to get the tests done…if anything should happen to this pup, due to a congenitial deformity, the contract probably says they will replace this pup…
If I were you (and I know this is hard, because it might feel like you’re inviting misfortune)…but I’d contact the breeder NOW…let them know what’s going on with this puppy. You want them to have a heads up on the fact that there is a congenital problem with this puppy. If this is a good breeder, they will want to know…for all you know there may be other pups in this litter having the same problems.
For the time being, it may just be that she needs a special diet, or surgery on her intestine (which could be done at the same time she’s spayed)…She just may end up being a very tiny girl, who’ll live a long life…
I’m sending you and her positive thoughts…
phrannie
PLEASE keep me posted if she is okk and what was wrong will ya?
Thank you all for your replies. I will be seeing the vet on wednesday and I’m keeping my fingers crossed. I have notified the breeder of the situation and will be keeping in touch with her if something is wrong.
The breeder seemed to be fine and I found her on a reputable website for pug pups for sale. I did see the parents but I do wonder if they were the parents I saw now. I have had her 3 weeks and she hasn’t really gained weight at all so I wonder if she will get any bigger.
Hmmm so 800 grams = about 27 ounces = 2lbs-ish? She should be a lot bigger than that. Are you sure she’s pure pug? She’s not mixed with another, smaller breed? Did you get her from a reputable breeder where you got to see the full grown size of the Mother and Father? That should be a decent indication of her growth…
I agree with Phrannie, contact the breeder..they need to know and if they are reputable, they will want to know. Keep her in contact with the vet and a 2nd opinion wouldnt hurt. Just go to someone you trust. My dixie was the runt of the liter, but never had any medical issues. She to this day is petite for a pug, a couple pf her pictures are deceiving in her size, but she is healthy. I wish you the best and I hope your little baby makes it okk. Please keep me informed and I will chack in..if I come across any new info for you, I’ll let you know.
