Ear cartilage piercing help?
I got my ear cartillage (helix) pierced today, and I got it done somewhere cheap (really not the best option, I know, stupid), and they didn’t really tell me anything about how to look after it.
I’ve heard salt + water or something, but how often, and how to I apply it?
And how long before I change the stud?
Thanks :):)
(ps, I know it was really stupid of me to get it done somewhere because it was cheap instead of waiting till I had the money, I’m the type of person who acts before they actually think…)
1.) Salt water soaks are great, you mix warm water with Epson salt (put enough in until it’s all dissolved, usually 1tbsp salt per 1cup water). And just completely dunk your ear in it haha. You should keep it in there for 5-10 mins. Less then 5 is a waste cause it’s not long enough to clean it, and more then 10 theres too much bacteria in the water. *In response to above, H2Ocean Spray isn’t great to use, as it can easily irritate the skin.
2.) After the salt soak you can use either an Anti-Bacterial soap or an Anti-microbial soap (from my experience the anti-microbial works better), and make sure which ever one you use is UN-scented. Just apply it with a q-tip to get the crusties off. I rotate the piercing 2-3 times while the soap is still on it, then rinse the soap off rotate it once more to make sure all the soap is gone.
- Each of the above should be done 2-3 times a day, no more no less. More can irritate it, and less puts you at chance of infection/
3.) If you begin to develop hypertrophic scarring (keliods) which is a white scar tissue buildup, as stated above, I and my piercer would say use hydrogen peroxide. Soak a q-tip in it, then apply it to the spot and press down for about 30 seconds while slowly rotating the q-tip. Then dry it off and your set.
* Sources: myself and my MANY piercings… haha if you need any more info I’d be glad to help =]
Good luck!
You don’t need to twist it. Just leave it alone whe you’re not cleaning it. There are different ways to clean it.
- Do salt soaks. Mix sea salt(not regular table salt) with warm water and you can use a q-tip to gently clean it. Don’t make the mixture too strong as it will irritte the piercing. You can do this as often as you’d like, but atleast twice a day. You can also by saline solution such as H2Ocean Spray which is the same thing, but it’s pre-made. It’s also cold, though too. You’re better off making the mixture yourself. 2)Use anti-bacterial liquid soap twice a day Yiu can also use a q-tip to apply it and then rinse it off. 3)You can try the old “don’t touch it or clean it let it be” method which as you can guess, you just leave the piercing along and let it take care of itself. (I wouldn’t suggest this) :] If you develope hypertrophic scarring for whatever reason you can get rid of it by either applying Extra Virgin Olive Oil with a q-tip on it or do camomile herbal tea soaks. You buy Camomile Herbal tea bags(don’t get it flavored)and heat up water, dunk the tea bag in it as if you’re really going to drink some tea, aha and instead of sugar, add a little table salt and use the tea bag to do hot compresses on your piercing. Just take the bag and hold it on there until the bag gets cold then duck it back in the cup and do it again. Do that for about 15 minutes a day. If you have any other questions I’d be happy to help. I LOVE piercings and know a lot about them. :] Good Luck, and I hope you never need to know how to cure hypertrophic scarring. =P
It wasn’t necessarily stupid for you to get it done cheap simply because anyone could get something pierced and pay big bucks for it, and it still get infected or they place it wrong. Same goes the other way around. You could find someone to do it really cheap, and they do an amazing job. On that note, I pierced my own cartilage! That was stupid. I developed hematoma, a bruise inside the skin, and it never healed. I left the earring in anyways (and changed it on a weekly basis) for well over 6 months, and just dealt with the pain because I liked how it looked! I eventually took it out because I didn’t want to deal with it anymore. I suggest cleaning it with ear cleaning solution, you can buy it at any Claire’s or a place that does ear-piercing. Using a salt/water solution is not necessary for ear piercings. That is mainly for tongue and other parts. Be sure to twist the earring a couple times throughout the day. And you would probably be safe changing it just when it isn’t sore anymore. To be on the safe side, wait atleast 3 months. Hope this helps! :]
well that dont make you stupid at all… I dont go get my piercing done by pro people I do them myself… I have done my cartilage 2 times the bottom of ears 2 time my lip and my belly all by my self… you just gotta keep it clean and make sure that you clean it everyday… you can use alcohol to clean it just pore some over the piercing and spin it around a few times… its best to keep it in for a few weeks but you can take it out whenever just dont leave it out for long or it will close up… well I hope I helped in anyway… if you need anything else just message me or what not lol
I did mine myself and to clean I just put that Claire’s stuff on it and it healed perfectly my piercer even said it looks good so that’s what I think you should do it’s a pretty basic piercing but if you are really worried simply go to a piercing shop and ask even if you didn’t get pierced there piercers are very friendly and will answer questions you have
Oh, a helix piercing? That’s nothing big. aha I thought this was like an industrial piercing. Don’t even bother cleaning it. =P Taking a shower and having shampoo and water running over it once a day or once every other day, depending on how ofter you shower will be enough. Take Care.
Well…I haven’t got my cartilage pierced yet, but I really want to get it done. With other ear piercings you normally leave it in for six weels, although with cartilage your meant to leave it in for twelve. Some simple disinfectant should help. Remember tyo twist the ear ring. BTW does it hurt! lol Hope this helps! xxx :]
