Dog Rings Bell to go potty and to go play!

We started training our puppy (she is 13 weeks old-had her for 3 weeks) to ring a bell on doorknob to go outside and do her business. But she likes to go outside to investigate our cats and play around so she rings the bell even after coming back inside to go out again. We don’t think we should let her out everytime because she is ringing it constantly but we don’t want to take a chance on her relieving herself inside if we ignore the ringing. She needs to know ringing the bell means doing her business and not going out to play. Any suggestions on how to get this across to her?

On top of watching when she goes and ignoring her, perhaps ring the bell when you witness her going?

My dog wants to do out all the time too. You may just need to purchase a doggie door, if you dont have a racoon problem.

Follow her outside and watch her do her business so you know when she does her business. Then if she rings the bell again don’t let her out. She should get used to it.

my dog rings a bell too! she does the same thing she will ring it even when she doesnt want to go potty she will ring it just to go outside. it is really annoying actually, I just ignore her when I know she just wants out to play. thats all I can really suggest just ignore her she will hopefully catch on sooner or later

Every time she rings the bell and goes and does her deed, have a treat to give her right away and praise her…she will catch on…I am doing that with my puppies in liter box training them since it is so cold here to have them go out.
