Dog rings a bell to go potty?, does it work? how does it work?

I’ve somehow ran across through a video on youtube; of how to train your dog to ring bells when he needs to go outside and do the bussiness. it amazed me, that’s why I wanted to learn and train my dog and new trick. Denver, my dog, is currently on the pee pads from day 1 until today! My boyfriend and I are living in a apartment as of now, but in 2 weeks we are moving out of this dumb, and moving in to our new home.

Now, my question are, does the dog has to be less than a year? (2. how long does it takes, to teach dog this trick? (my dog is 14 months) (3. what should I do if I am not home to take him out…and he needs too? (4. what should I buy, to start this trick/training?

I am greatly appreciated , and thank you for your time and answers!

well I’m no expert, but I taught my dog how to ring a bell when he has to go outside.. and I read how to do it in some book. but first before you do any of that, you have to make sure your dog understands what “OUTSIDE” means. so from now on whenever you take your dog out for a potty break, guide her out of the door and say OUTSIDE everytime you let her out. eventually she’ll associate the word outside with going pee. once she understands what outside means, you can start the whole bell process.. buy a bell that hangs low enough so your dog can reach it.. the one I have for my dog is just one of those christmas type round jingle bells that hangs from the doorknob.. after that, every single time you pass by the door you have to ring the bell with your hand to get her attention and say “OUTSIDE.” just like before, eventually she’ll connect the dots. bell=outside, outside=pee. it took my dog about 2 weeks before he became a total pro with the bell.

it’s actually not that hard of a trick for a dog to learn as you may think, it just takes a bit of patience and practice from both owner and pet :]

I got a bell on a piece of leather shaped like a bone, hanging from the door knob…Moj rings it anytime he wants outside…it was easy to teach, and it does work…but you have to housetrain them first, of course…:)

I trained him with treats just to ring it…he hit it out of curiosity and by accident at first, but I rewarded right away…then the reward changed to going outside when he hit the bell (his favorite place to be, anyway…so a perfect reward)…

My dog does that…

I tied a bell on a string, put a rubberband on the end of the string and hung it on the door. Every time I took the dog out, I said “let’s go Ouuut” in a sing-song voice, and ring the bell hanging from the door very deliberately.

After about a month of doing this every single time we’d go potty, she began to hit the bell with her nose when she needed to go. To this day, even though we moved and haven’t put the bell up in the new house, she hits the air with her nose under the doorknob to let us know it’s time to go :)

smiling id like to know what the people next door reckon if your doggie ringing a bell all day ans your away …lol or at 2am in morning and youve just got to sleep like do you get up and let out?no seriously I think training your dogs to go out at morning and evening is a far better solution . by way if you take your dogs with you to visit what do you do regards the bells the more im thinking of this the more I want to see that vid lol …I think you should enjoy your dog and toss a ball for rather then ringing bells I hope I’ve helped but its a complicated question

Oh also let me mention the key to this is repetition. Be consistent and do it every single time.
